From the Editor's Preface: This is “the second great national history of China, encompassing the events of nearly a millennium and a half.” The translator, Achilles Fang “has set himself the task not primarily of discussing, but of showing, by translation and documentation in extenso, the principles and methods by which Ssu-ma Kuang worked” (p. xi).
The original softcover printing has been rebound in black library buckram. The spine has the title in white. The call number written at the foot of the spines has been blacked out they are barely visible. The original covers have been glued onto the front covers. They show some wear from rubbing. The corners are sharp. There are the remnants of the bar code stickers at the top of the rear covers.
Text block is tight, bright and unmarked. The top page edges are slightly gray from exposure. The side and bottom page edges are clean.
Ex Library set with minimal markings: pockets for date cards on the inside front cover (marked "Withdrawn") and front free end paper, shelf number and accession numbers are on the verso of the title pages, accession number is repeated in the bottom margin of p. 49 in both volumes.
