Two copies of the Grosset & Dunlap reprint of Grey's 1935 book. The first is a special autographed edition released in 1936 (there is a Christmas 1936 date penciled in at the top of the inside front cover). Grey's signature on the special illustrated free front end paper is strong. It lacks the dust jacket, so I have bundled it with a second, later G&D printing that includes a dust jacket. Per G&D's usual practice, both copies have the original 1935 date on the copyright page, but they were not printed the same year. The signed copy has woven green cloth over boards and is printed in slightly heavier paper, while the second copy has a random pattern to the green cloth. The first has a strong "D" in "Thunder" on the first half-title page; the second has a broken "D", indicating a later printing.
Both bindings are tight and the pages, though toned from age, have no other marks. The front cover of the signed copy has a white smudge in the middle and a black spot in the middle of the upper page of the back cover. In addition, there are two cuts at the bottom edge of the back cover. The dust-jacketed copy, on the other hand, shows only minimal wear. See the pictures for comparisons of the differences between the two printings. The dust jacket has small chips (not affecting the text) at the top of the front panel and spine, but there is a diagonal hole affecting the "un" of "Thunder" on the spine. The jacket is now protected in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. The art and font of the title on the front panel and spine are the same as the original 1936 dust jacket, but the rest of the jacket is different. Its front flap has a "100100" code at the top, indicating a retail price of $1.00, whereas the original signed edition had a price of 75 cents. The rear panel and flap have different copy from the original's dust jacket, as well. While not exactly the same jacket, the two make a nice pair for the Grey collector.
The weight of 1 lb. 13 ounces is for the two copies combined. The 1936 signed copy is 15 ounces and the later reprint is 14 ounces Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1 lb 13 oz. Category: Fiction; Western; United States; 1930s; ISBN: No ISBN. Inventory No: 1102.
