Ralph D. Paine, The Book of Buried Treasure (New York: Sturgis & Walton Company, 1911). First Edition.

Binding: Hardcover (Original Cloth). Book Condition: Very Good Condition. Size: 8"-9" - Octavo (8vo). 425 pages. Item Type: Book.

A scarce book, especially in its original printing by Sturgis & Walton in September 1911. It is a mix of stories of hidden treasure from pirates and shipwrecks and contemporary accounts of the treasure-seekers who are searching for them. Many of the photos are of the equipment and methods of searching being used at the turn of the last century.

OCLC has four numbers for the book, but all of them point to the same 10 libraries (three in the U.S.), none of which have this original printing of the book.

Hardcover attractively bound in dark burgundy cloth with seven embossed images and the title on a bright gilt field on the front cover and the title in bright gilt on the spine. The cloth has the expected shelf wear at the corners, along the edges and head and foot of the spine. No foxing in this copy.

The front cover is slightly shaken, but the text block is generally tight and clean. The pages have tanned from age. Black & white illustrations on coated stock throughout. Deckled edges (rough cut), browned. Top edge gilt in good condition.

The previous owner's name on the free front end paper has been covered over with an old glued label. There is a label from Bretano's Bookstore in Washington, D.C., at the lower left corner of the inside rear cover.
