First American Edition. 2 Vols. (though rebound as one). Binding: Hardcover (Full Leather). Book Condition: Binding Copy. Item Type: Book.

Pagination: Vol. 1: iv, [13]-234, contents [235], [1] p.; Vol. 2: title [1], contents [3], [5]-236 p. Missing the leaves of blank pages Blanck lists (in two variants) at the end of Vol. 2. Rebound copy of the First American Edition of Washington Irving’s The Alhambra (only identified as “the Author of The Sketch Book”). According to Blanck the English edition preceded this American by a month (May vs. June). The matching points are the misspelling of Philadelphia as “Philadelphla” in the imprint of Vol. 1 and the copyright notice only appearing in Vol. 1.

WorldCat shows multiple holdings under three OCLC numbers: 754330116 (Van Pelt Library, University of Pennsylvania), 34843963 (New York Public Library – Rare Book Collection, University of Kentucky Libraries - Special Collections Research Center, Hagley Museum and Library) and 276433 (98 holdings, though a spot check showed that a few only had one of the two volumes).

Bound in marbled calf. While the boards are attached, the spine is heavily worn and is split down the middle and the left half is loose. The leather is worn around the edges. Three of the corners are sharp, though the board is showing at the tips; the front bottom corner has more extensive wear, exposing the board, which is rounded from wear. The front hinge is broken, though the front cover is held by some of the cords and the end paper. The end paper of the rear hinge is split and the cover is holding on only by two middle cords.

The text block itself is tight. The paper has tanned from age. There is heavy foxing on the front and rear free end pages and title page for Vol. I and last page of the text. There is also foxing throughout the text, particularly along the outside page edge, but also scattered across the text. The page edges are browned. A few (3 or 4) leaves in Vol. II were not cut well, resulting in some raggedly edges towards the back of the book.
