Kaufman and Kay, in their book “G” Is for Grafton (1997), and Wiletta L. Heising in Detecting Women (1994) credit Grafton with being one of the writers who originated the genre of detective stories about women private eyes and “revolutionized crime fiction in the 1980s” (Heising, p. 62).

In By a Woman’s Hand (1994), Swanson and James point out the roots of Millhone’s character: “Tough, stubborn, but with a healthy sense of humor as a saving grace, Kinsey is definitely a descendant of the wise-cracking, hard-boiled male private eye who has been a staple of American detective fiction for seventy years” (p. 85). But Kaufman and Kay note that Grafton has added a “concern for the psychology of her characters and the human richness of her central detective” (p. 329). Grafton’s Kinsey, they write, “is unique and especially admirable for the way in which she has learned an important lesson about life: the solution to a problem lies within the problem itself—if one has the ability to see it and act on it” (p. 334). As a result, “Grafton is a leader, arguably the leader, of the team reshaping the genre into a more psychologically interesting and socially aware form” (Kaufman & Kay p. 334).
