de Moulin, the Younger, Pierre. Early Dutch reprint.
Binding: Hardcover (Full Leather). Book Condition: Good+ Condition. Size: 5"-6" - Vigesimo-quarto (24mo). 733 pages. [1]-608, [1]-125, 7 blank p. (verso of p. 125 and 2 leaves). Item Type: Book.
The first title page lists the two works (in translation to English) as "Discourse of the Peace of the Soul and the Contentment of the Spirit" (originally published in English in 1657) and "Reflections and Prayers on Every Day of the Week : In Preparation for Holy Communion." The separate title page for "Reflections" adds "En een Verhandeling van de wezentlijke vorm ofte nature van het recht-veerdigmaaken de Geloof," which translates to "And a Treatise of the essential form or nature of justifying the Faith." The "Treatise is on pp. 118b-125 at the end of the text. du Moulin (1601–1684) was a French Huguenot minister and writer who emigrated to England, where he became an Anglican and sided with the Royalists during the English Civil War.
The text block is holding well, though there is some separation through the text at the signatures, exposing the cords, especially at the front title page and rear hinge. Overall the pages are toned. The title page shows some dirt from handling (particularly at the outside margin). The last 30 pages of the second work (pp. 95-125) are creased in the upper corner with some loss at the corner without loss of text on pp. 127.134. The very last page has a 1.5" diagonal tear from the gutter to the top of the page with a chip that affects the top two lines of text.
Polished calf over boards. Front corners are bent; rear bottom board is peeking through. Small hole (about 1/4") through the leather on the front cover. Hinges show some wear with a 3/8" separation at the top of the rear hinge. However, the binding is holding well, in spite of the thickness of the book (2"). No title on the spine, but there are five double lines indicating the bands of the binding. Scattered foxing, but text mostly clean.
There is an inscription by a previous owner on the front free end paper and a bookplate of another, but more recent, owner pasted to the inside front cover. Because of the small format of the book, only one-quarter of the plate is glued in and the rest of plate is folded down to fit the space. Marbled edges, faded. Two separate works bound as one (as given on the main title page), with a separate title and pagination for the second work.
