Burnett, Frances Hodgson.  A Little Princess: Being the whole story of Sara Crewe now told for the first time (in original box). New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1933. Later Printing.

Binding: Hardcover (in box). Illustrator: Ethel Franklin Betts. Book Condition: Very Good- Condition. Size: 8"-9" - Octavo (8vo). 266 pages. Item Type: Book.

A key feature of this printing is that the box is still in its original box, which features the front cover's paste-down image with title and author on the top of the box.

This copy has all eight color plates (in addition to the frontis) by Ethel Franklin Betts intact, as called for in the list of illustrations. It appears a previous owner removed plates from an earlier printing (the 1931 printing, for example, had 10 plus the frontis) since disbound copies of the eight plates included in this printing plus three more have been laid into the box.

Blue cloth over boards with a bright gilt title on the spine and color illustration of Sara holding a doll and watched birds flying pasted down on the front cover. The corners are sharp with some wear at the tips and a little wear at the head and foot of the spine. At some point the box got wet (there is a tide mark at bottom edge of both sections of the box). There is some moisture damage to the cloth (white spots on the front cover and spine, some dulling to the black background on the left edge of the paste-down and some foxing on the white clouds).

There is loss of the blue paper over the cardboard of the box at all of the corners, especially those of the top section of the box. All four of those corners were reinforced with brown glossy tape at some time in the past.

The text block is good and is tight, although the front hinge is a bit shaken. There is no sign of water damage in the book, except for some slight tide marks at the top and bottom edges of the title page. There is a little foxing in the white space at the bottom of the frontis. The only page that shows any foxing is p. 261, which is the page behind the last illustration.

The original price tag ($2.50) is intact on the free front end paper, along with the name of a previous owner, who has signed in pencil. The top page edges are lightly stained in red. The side page edges are slightly deckled.

The leaf for the Contents page has a 1.5" diagonal tear in the top half of the outside edge, not affecting any text.
