Bromfield, Louis.  Pleasant Valley. Sixteenth Edition. New York: Harper & Row, 1945. Signed by Author; with Malabar Farm promotional piece and map.

Binding: Hardcover (Original Cloth). Book Condition: Very Good Condition. Dust Jacket Condition: Good+. Size: 8"-9" - Octavo (8vo). 302 pages. Item Type: Book.

A signed copy of one of Bromfield's best-known books. He has inscribed the half-title page "with the best wishes | of | [signature]" and marked it "Malabar 1948" in the upper corner of the page.

In addition to the book, there is 1953 printing of a 12-page booklet on Malabar Farm. It provides the background on the naming of the property, the work done to conserve the fields and Bromfield's philosophy of "human ecology" in developing it. The booklet mentions the three books Bromfield wrote on agriculture and country living, including "Pleasant Valley."

Laid into the booklet is a contemporary folded "Sketch Map" of Ohio showing the routes to drive to "Lucas - Bromfield Farm."

Text block is tight, bright and unmarked. Hardcover in black cloth over boards with the Harper logo in red at the lower corner of the front cover and title in bright gilt over a red field on the spine. There are some spots where the glossiness of the cloth has dulled. The corners of the boards are slightly turned in and the tip of the bottom front cover is worn through to the board. Minor shelf wear to the head and foot of the spine. The rear end paper is darkened from the underlying glue at the hinge. No foxing in this copy. The page edges are slightly browned.

The unclipped ($3.00) dust jacket has wear at the folds, large chips at the head of the spine (not affecting any of the title) and smaller chips at the foot of the spine and heads and feet of the folds for the flaps. There is a tide mark in the lower three inches of the fold of the front flap and a one inch wide tide mark down the fold of the rear flap (a half-inch either side of the fold). There is also what appears to be a 1/2" square sticker scar right under the title on the spine and a crease down the middle of the spine. The dust jacket is now protected in a clear archival Brodart sleeve.
