Booth (1734-1806) was an English Baptist minister, writer and Abolitionist. He started as a General (Arminianism) Baptist, but became a Particular (Calvinist) Baptist. This is his best known work, which has been in print since its original publication in 1768. WorldCat reports only seven libraries holding copies of this edition (OCLC Number 1188420). The text is followed by 7 pp. of Subscribers and 4 pp. of the publisher's catalog (arranged by size). Interestingly, among the subscribers listed at the end of the volume are "James (a black man), Northampton" and "Yalf, (a black man)."

The text block is tight and unmarked, though the pages have toned from age. Polished leather over boards with gilt title on a red Morocco panel on the spine. There is a 1/4" square chip from the bottom of the panel affecting the decoration, but not the title itself. There is wear around the edges, with the corners turned in and the boards showing through at the tips (particularly the lower corner of the rear cover. The covers are holding at the hinges, though they have come unglued from the spine. Moderately foxed throughout. There is a dark semi-circular stain at the gutter about the size of a quarter affecting the pages of the list of subscribers and the first page of the publisher's catalog. A previous owner, Silas Hough, has signed his name twice on the free front end paper. There is a slip of paper marked "Mont. Ch. Library" pasted to the inside front cover. Evans 33434.
