Roberts, Kenneth. Why Europe Leaves Home. Indianapolis, IN: Bobbs-Merrill, 1922. First Edition. Signed by Author.

Binding: Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good Condition. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. 356 pages. illus. 22 cm.

Roberts' second book, drawn from articles he wrote on immigration and events in Europe for "The Saturday Evening Post." The standard Roberts bibliographies report there were only 2,011 copies of the first edition printed.

Signed "With all the good wishes of | Kenneth Roberts" on his bookplate, which is pasted to the inside front cover. Roberts-signed copies are scare, although this is a later signature, since Roberts didn't use this book plate until after he started writing his novels and didn't make a practice of providing signed book plates until later, when the demand caused him to stop flat-signing books that were sent to him.

VG hardback missing the scarce dust jacket, but with an author-signed bookplate. Red textured cloth over boards with faded gilt title on spine. Front panel has embossed single-line border around the edges; corners are sharp, though showing some wear at the tips. There is some dullness to the bottom 1" of the front cover and 1/2" at the bottom of the back cover from exposure to moisture. There is also a spot about the size of a dime in the middle of the front cover.

Text block is unmarked, with the exception of a note in the gutter on p. 3 ("16718 - Jan. 1923"); the pages are slightly tanned from age. The binding is tight overall, but the bottom of the front hinge is a bit loose.

In addition to the frontispiece there are 13 leaves of coated stock with pictures printed on both sides.
