A rare copy of the First Edition that includes the folded map in the pocket on the inside rear cover. There is no publication date but it is generally assigned 1904 based on the date on the map. Copies held in the nine libraries listed in WorldCat are variously dated from 1904 to 1912. The second edition, published in 1920, is clearly marked as such on the title page and includes an additional preface.

In addition to serving as the minister of the Union Church in Shanghai from 1899 to 1919, Rev. Darwent was a founding member of the Shanghai Amateur Photographic Society and 64 of his own photographs (taken around 1902) illustrate the guidebook.

The map is titled "A Map of The Foreign Settlements at Shanghai 1904". It is printed in black (with blue for water and red to label and mark boundaries of the city's districts) on thin waxed paper and folds out to 29 3/4" x 21 1/4". It has a 3/8" tear at the far left section of the top margin, a 1 7/8" tear along the bottom fold in the left margin. and two small (1/8" or less) tears at the intersection of folds along the top fold. There is a darkened strip down the left side of the panel with the legend from having been exposed (not covered by a fold).

Text block, printed on glossy paper, is tight, bright and unmarked. Bound in original blue cloth over boards with the image of a temple embossed on the front cover with the image in ivory and title in bright gilt. Title in bright gilt on spine and advertisement for Standard Life Office on the rear cover, also in bright gilt. There is wear around the edges (with a small cut on the top edge of the front cover) and the corners are slightly bent. The blue of the spine has dulled and there is wear at the head and foot. Front hinge is shaken; the end paper has a 3 1/2" split in the middle of the hinge. The rear hinge is tight . No foxing in this copy. John Stockwell has written his name in pencil on the title page and bottom of the legend of the map. The page edges are gray from exposure and have a few scattered dark spots. 4 p.l., xx, 221, [1] p. plates, Index, Advertisements on 26 unnumbered pages, front and rear free endpapers and front and rear pastedowns, folded map (in pocket).
