Sammelband of Two Huguenot Works, in French. Porrée originally published the first treatise (in English, History of ceremonies and superstitions that have entered the Church) under the title of Traité des anciennes ceremonies (Treatise of the old ceremonies) in 1646 with a second edition in 1662. It was reprinted a number of times, though an 1858 French language article reports this printing by Bernard was the first with this title. In it Porrée examines church worship for almost a millennium to discover the original purity of the ceremonies and thus answer those who challenged the French Protestants by asking, “Where is your religion before Calvin?"

The second work was published in English with full title translated as A preservative against the change of religion, or, A just and true idea of the Roman Catholick religion, opposed to the flattering portraictures made thereof, and particularly to that of my Lord of Condom. Its author, Pierre Jurieu was a Huguenot pastor who left France for the Netherlands at the beginning of the persecutions and wrote several works such as this, defending the French Protestants and attacking the methods of “conversion” of the French monarchy and its dragoons.

The publisher, Jean Frederic Bernard, was a French language bookseller based in Amsterdam and publisher of Huguenot works such as these.

The hinges are holding and the text block is tight. The laid paper is bright and supple.

Leather over boards with gilt triple-lined border on the front and back covers. Gilt decoration on the spine, but the title panel has perished. The leather of the hinges is heavily worn and some of the bands are showing at the back. No foxing other than a small spot at the upper gutter of the first title page. There is no marking in the text, but there are some penciled numbers that appear to have been written by a past bookseller. Marbled edges in good condition.
