A collectible copy of the fifth book in the mid-century Landmark series on American History. Includes the text of the Declaration of Independence and list of signers at the end of the book.
Fisher was a well-known novelist at the time. Doremus' numerous half to full-page illustrations are printed in black and olive green.
The internal lists of books on the last page and the lists on the rear panel of the dust jacket match: 1-30 for the Landmark series and 1-10 for the World Landmark series.
In creating the Landmark series of books, Random House put together some of the best writers of the time (including historians and novelists) to tell the story of "appealing subjects from America's past." Kathy Artner, in her "Reader's Guide to American HIstory," called them "the best collection of children's histories ever written." David Spear, in his Oct. 2016 article on the series for the American Historical Association, notes, Random publisher Bennet "Cerf set the pattern for the series by persuading celebrated novelist Dorothy Canfield Fisher to write two of the early volumes—one on Paul Revere and the other called Our Independence and Constitution. Her name added a certain gravitas to a new series directed at teens ...."
Bound in blue cloth over boards with title and decoration in black and red on the front cover and spine. Corners are sharp, with some wear at the tips. Minor wear at the head and foot of the spine. There is a 5/8" band around the edges where the blue has slightly sun-faded. There is a small (3/8") spot at the bottom edge of the front cover. The endpapers show diamonds with images from the covers of the books in the series.
The text block is tight, bright and unmarked. No foxing in this copy. All page edges are clean, neat and free of foxing. The top page edge is stained red.
Unclipped (150/150) dust jacket has some wear along the edges with a few small chips at the bottom of the front fold, top of the rear fold and at the foot of the spine. There is a diagonaly crease down the spine from the front fold towards the top of the middle of the foot. The jacket is now protected in a clear archival Brodart sleeve.
