Reprints of the two volumes originally published by the Civil War Centennial Commission of Tennessee. Part One (471 pp.) is from the 5th Printing and Part Two (608 pp.) is from the 6th Printing, both done in 1994.

Part One has the military histories of the Civil War units from Tennessee. The units described are divided into the following categories: The Provisional Army of Tennessee, Confederate Cavalry Units, Confederate Artillery Units, Confederate Infantry Units, Federal Cavalry Units, Federal Artillery Units and Federal Infantry Units (including 14 U.S. Colored Infantry Regiments). The final section provides a list of companies by their county of origin.

Part Two provides “rosters of Confederate and of Federal personnel who serve in Tennessee organizations or organizations of a Tennessee connotation during the Civil War.” The rosters were compiled from the microfilm of muster rolls held in the National Archives, contemporary local newspapers in the state, regimental and other histories, county histories, personal letters and tombstones. The names are in alphabetical order, providing the name and the identification of the unit in which he served.

The two volumes are bound in black cloth over boards with titles in bright gilt on the front covers and spines. They are enclosed in Brodart clear plastic covers, which has helped keep them in Near Fine condition with sharp corners and minimal shelf wear. The bindings are tight, in spite of the size of the volumes, and the pages are bright and unmarked. The only defects are the stamp of the company that originally owned the copies on the inside front covers and a previous owner’s name, city and date and note naming the person from whom he received the books at the upper right corner of the front free end papers.
